*These requirements are based on Part 5 of the Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Regulation, administered by SafeWork Manitoba. Effective November 23, 2018, all Manitoba workplaces must maintain first aid kits that comply with the CSA Z1220-17 standard. The CSA standard requires kits to be inspected at minimum quarterly (every three months).
⚠️ Manitoba requires a written First Aid Risk Assessment before determining your kit type. A competent person must assess your workplace to determine the appropriate kit classification (Type 2 Basic for low risk; Type 3 Intermediate for moderate or high risk) and the required attendant level (Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced). The assessment must be kept on file. Note: one kit is required for every 25 workers, up to a maximum of 4 kits.Visit SafeWork Manitoba for guidance →

Kit type is determined by your written risk assessment. Most restaurants are Low Risk → Type 2 Basic. Larger or higher-hazard commercial kitchens may be assessed as Moderate Risk → Type 3 Intermediate. Remember: one kit per every 25 workers on shift.

Understanding Manitoba Restaurant First Aid Requirements
Manitoba workplace first aid is governed by Part 5 of the Workplace Safety and Health Regulation, administered by SafeWork Manitoba. Effective November 23, 2018, all Manitoba employers must maintain first aid kits compliant with the national CSA Z1220-17 standard, and first aiders must be certified to the CSA Z1210-17 training standard. Kit type is determined by a written risk assessment: low-risk workplaces require a Type 2 Basic kit; moderate and high-risk workplaces require a Type 3 Intermediate kit. Most restaurants fall into the low-to-moderate risk range given the burn, laceration, and slip hazards inherent to commercial kitchens.
Manitoba has a unique requirement not found in most other provinces: one first aid kit must be provided for every 25 workers on shift, up to a maximum of four kits. First aider names must also be posted visibly at or near the first aid station. Attendant certification levels have been renamed to align with the national standard — Basic (formerly FA1), Intermediate (formerly FA2), and Advanced (formerly FA3) — and must be issued by a SafeWork Manitoba–approved training agency. Kits must be inspected at minimum quarterly (four times per year) per the CSA Z1220-17 standard.
In addition to WSH Regulation requirements, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and local health authorities require food-safe supplies in any commercial kitchen — most critically, high-visibility blue bandages to replace standard adhesive dressings. This audit tool helps Manitoba restaurant operators verify compliance with both SafeWork Manitoba and food safety standards in a single quarterly inspection.
