Understanding Alberta Workplace First Aid Requirements

Alberta workplace first aid is governed by Part 11 of the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code. Effective March 31, 2023, Alberta formally adopted the national CSA Z1220-17 standard for workplace first aid kits, replacing the previous provincial kit specifications. This applies to all workplaces and industries covered by Alberta OHS legislation.

Under the CSA Z1220-17 standard as adopted in Alberta, kit requirements are determined by the number of workers per shift. A Type 2 Small kit is required for 2–25 workers, a Type 2 Medium kit for 26–50 workers, and a Type 2 Large kit for 51–100 workers. All kit sizes require a trained first aider on every shift at a level appropriate for the workplace's hazard rating — low, medium, or high hazard workplaces have different certification requirements under Part 11 of the OHS Code.

A notable feature of the Alberta / CSA Z1220-17 standard compared to some other provinces is the explicit requirement for single-use antibiotic ointment packets in all kit sizes — these are a required kit item, not an add-on. Monthly inspections are strongly recommended for all workplaces to ensure supplies remain stocked, in good condition, and within expiry. This audit tool helps Alberta employers across all industries verify compliance with the OHS Code in a single structured inspection.
