*Construction is classified as high hazard work under the Alberta OHS Code (Schedule 2, Table 3). This means construction sites are legally required to have a CSA Type 3 Intermediate First Aid Kit — not a basic Type 2 kit. Requirements are based on the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code and the CSA Z1220-17 national standard, effective March 31, 2023.

Understanding Alberta Construction First Aid Requirements
Under the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code (Part 11), construction and demolition work is formally classified as high hazard work (Schedule 2, Table 3). This classification carries a significantly higher standard of compliance than low or medium-hazard industries. Effective March 31, 2023, Alberta adopted the national CSA Z1220-17 standard, replacing previous kit types with a new system. For high-hazard construction sites, this means a mandatory CSA Type 3 Intermediate First Aid Kit is required — not the basic Type 2 kit used in lower-risk workplaces.
The Type 3 Intermediate kit contains substantially more supplies than a basic kit, including items specific to serious trauma: an arterial tourniquet, a rigid malleable splint for fracture management, larger compress dressings (15.2 x 15.2 cm), sterile eye dressing sets for debris injuries, glucose tablets, instant cold packs, non-adherent wound dressings, and larger-gauge gauze pads. Depending on the number of workers on shift, you require a Small (2–25 workers), Medium (26–50 workers), or Large (51–100 workers) Type 3 kit.
Beyond the kit itself, Alberta construction sites must ensure that both a Basic First Aider and an Intermediate First Aider (per CSA Z1210-17 training standards) are designated and on-site every shift. Prime contractors are also responsible for a written emergency transportation plan, posted signage, a functioning emergency communication system, and a current first aid incident log. Failure to comply with OHS Code requirements can result in fines from $100–$500 per violation plus a 15% victim surcharge.
