Requirement Matrix: Find Your Quebec Kit (CSA Z1220-17)
| Hazard Level | 1 Worker (Isolated) | 2 – 25 Workers | 26 – 50 Workers | 51 – 100 Workers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low Hazard (e.g., Office, Library) | Type 1: Personal Kit | Type 2: Basic (Small) | Type 2: Basic (Medium) | Type 2: Basic (Large) |
| High Hazard (e.g., MFG, Forestry) | Type 1: Personal Kit | Type 3: Intermediate (Small) | Type 3: Intermediate (Medium) | Type 3: Intermediate (Large) |
*For work sites with more than 100 workers, employers must provide additional kits proportionally. In Quebec, a dedicated First Aid Room is generally required for workplaces with 100 or more workers.
Quebec Compliance FAQ
Are CSA Z1220-17 first aid kits mandatory in Quebec?
Yes. Since March 2021, the CNESST requires all workplaces in Quebec to comply with the CSA Z1220-17 standard. The previous provincial kit requirements have been replaced by these national standards to ensure better protection for workers and consistency across Canada.
What is the difference between a 'Basic' and 'Intermediate' kit in Quebec?
Type 2 (Basic) kits are intended for "Low Hazard" environments where the risk of severe injury is minimal, such as retail or professional offices. Type 3 (Intermediate) kits are mandatory for "High Hazard" environments like construction, heavy manufacturing, or forestry, as they include more specialized supplies for trauma management.
How many first aid kits does my Quebec business need?
The number and size of kits depend on the maximum number of workers present during a single shift. A Small kit covers up to 25 people, a Medium kit up to 50, and a Large kit up to 100. If you have multiple floors or buildings, kits should be distributed so they are easily accessible to everyone within a few minutes.
What are the CNESST requirements for first aid registers?
Quebec regulations require that every intervention be recorded in a first aid register. This record must include the name of the injured person, the date and time of the accident, a description of the injury, and the type of first aid administered. These records must be kept confidential and stored for at least five years.
When is a First Aid Room required in Quebec?
According to the Regulation respecting minimum standards of first aid and first care, an employer who has 100 or more workers on any one shift at a single workplace must provide a first aid room. This room must be easy to access, climate-controlled, and equipped with a telephone and specific medical furniture.
How often should I inspect my first aid kits in Quebec?
CNESST regulations imply that kits must be "complete and in good condition" at all times. Best practice is to inspect your kits every three months (quarterly) and after every use to ensure that expired items are replaced and used items are restocked immediately.
